Web site hosting is when your web pages (Web Site) reside on a computer (Server) which is connected to the Internet with a permanent connection (leased line).  When someone types in your domain name the DNS (Domain Name System) directs them to the server where your pages are stored.   Your email also gets sent to this location as well.  

A domain name is a text-based translation of a series of numbers used by a computer to identify an organisation or individual on the Internet.   Registering a domain name is, in many ways, the equivalent of registering a company name with the government.   No two names can be the same.   It is important that the domain name chosen by an organisation provides its customers with an easy-to-remember address.
